Your 1 Year Old
Understanding a Child Who is a 1 Year Old
All children develop at different paces. The following is a general overview of the development of a child at 12 months to help you select products and unique gifts suitable for a one-year-old child.
Toddlers at 12 months
I am on the move, either crawling or walking and I am starting to get into everything, manipulating things along the way.
I like doing things on my feet so that I can practice better balance and co-ordination, so I like toys that help get me on the go such as baby walkers.
I am trying to feed myself, and am beginning to make sounds as I learn to talk. Although I may not be able to say much at the moment, I can probably understand a lot of what you are saying to me, so you can tell me about instructions to simple games.
If I have been introduced to books already, I can now enjoy turning the pages. I enjoy books with large letters and colourful pictures. I especially enjoy books with interaction that have features such as puppets, flaps or magnets. I like stacking bricks and, better still, knocking them down. I also like playing with building blocks and shape sorters; they help me to be on the move and develop fine co-ordination skills.
I am starting to notice the things that you adults do and I love in my own way to mimic both you and other children.
