Understanding a Child from Birth to Six Months
All children develop at different paces. To help you select suitable products and unique gifts, the following is a general overview of the development of a child in the first year, as seen from the eyes of a growing baby.
I am a young baby and I have very different needs to older babies. I like sensory toys and objects with bright colours. Soft toys are nice to touch. From a very young age, I like you to talk to me.
As I approach six months, I have better hand-eye co-ordination. I am starting basic manipulation of toys through touch and shaking – rattles are ideal. I am also starting to enjoy dropping objects, so my toys need to be robust! Books with colourful and bright pictures are great.

As an older baby, I am getting better at communicating and I am starting to explore toys a bit more. If I decide I want to crawl then I will be doing so around now. I may even have taken my first steps. I am learning to use my voice to communicate.
I love being outside as much as possible. I also love being tickled with cuddly toys, and throwing and squeezing soft balls. I enjoy bashing your pots and pans. I like playthings like soft toys and rattles because I can grab and let go of them easily. I also enjoy stacking rings and blocks that are bright, light and easy to move.
